How to use the paint calculator

  1. Add up the widths of the walls you’re painting.
  2. Enter the wall height, doors and windows.
  3. Choose the number of coats.

Assumptions

A door is taken as about 1.9 m² (20 ft²) and a window as 1.5 m² (15 ft²). Default coverage is 10 m² per litre or 350 ft² per US gallon; check the tin, because textured walls and dark-to-light changes need more.

Examples

16 m of wall, 2.5 m high, 1 door, 2 windows, 2 coats

7.02 litres

48 ft of wall, 8 ft high, 1 door, 1 window, 2 coats

2 gallons

Questions

Does it include the ceiling?

No. For a ceiling, enter its length as the wall length and its width as the height, with no doors or windows.

How many coats do I need?

Two is typical. A primer plus two coats helps when covering a strong colour.
