Tips for a good sitemap

List only pages you want in search results: the canonical, working version of each page, not redirects or pages marked noindex. A sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs. Google ignores change frequency and priority, so they’re off by default, but it does use an accurate last-modified date.

Does it crawl my site to find pages?

No. For privacy and speed it uses the URLs you paste. Many site builders and CMSs can export a list of your pages.
