How to use the tip calculator

  1. Type the bill amount.
  2. Choose a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. Tick Round each share up for easy, whole-number payments.

How much should you tip?

Tipping customs vary a lot by country. In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is common for table service. In many European countries, rounding up or leaving 5–10% is typical. In Japan, tipping is usually not expected. When in doubt, check local customs or whether service is already included on the bill.

Tip before or after tax?

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, since tax isn’t part of the service. Enter whichever amount you prefer — the calculator simply applies the percentage to the number you type.

Examples

Tip $11.61 · total $76.11 · $38.06 each

Questions

What does rounding up do?

It rounds each person’s share up to the next whole amount and shows the resulting tip percentage, which will be slightly higher than the one you chose.

Can I enter a custom tip?

Yes. Type any percentage into the tip field, including decimals like 12.5.

Can the split be uneven?

This tool splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person’s items separately with their own tip.
